Wow.....amazing....an overwhelming response from TWSS Teachers and Staff, as well as the PSG members.

Today, parents and teachers met in TWSS hall having a friendly game. Everyone was energetic and well prepared for the game. Vice principal Gideon Yong and PSG vice chair Ho Kin Kee were present in the event to give support, even our ex-principal Adrian Cordeiro were also present.

As the event was a friendly match, everyone participated in the game. It was seen that the courts were overwhelmed and have to take turn to go for the games. Teachers and parents took the initiative to have some competitive games between teachers and parents. This involved double men, double women and mix double. We also glad to see our former principal, Mr. Cordeiro joined us in the game.

Refreshment was also provided by the parents. The welfare was well taken care to everyone. Teachers and parents were mingled together to build better relationship.

At the end of the event, we invited Gideon Yong to close the event and everyone going back with a more healthy body.

I would like to specially thanks to Salam, who is the main organiser of this event...Jamil, the facilitator and Kasturi, the liaison officer, who contact all the PSG members and teachers for this event. This event will not succesfully carried out without their help. At the same time, a group of supporters in assisting them on the preparation work :- Haslina, Mano, Hasmah and Rahmah.

I am looking forward to have more events comming out ......

"It was raining cats and dogs. Yet a group of parents, students and teachers turned up undeterred at TWSS hall. Rackets were brandished, wrists were flexed in every direction and those springs in their limbs tested.

A table laden with comfort food, called out to the players. But their focus was on sizing up their opponents and discussing their strategy.

Wait a minute, isn't this supposed to be a laid back, friendly match between the staff and parents/students of TWSS?! What can I say? Kiasuism Lives!!! Soon the game evolved to a lively and vigorous phase amid playful banters. By the time the game ended, both teams were exhausted and hungry.

Who won? Well, its a friendly match, remember! Teachers and parents mingled while savouring the delicious mini buffet. Many, many thanks to Hasmah, Haslinda and Rahmah for volunteering to whip up their specialties with money donated from their own pockets!! Thank you ladies, we really appreciate you.

After a scrumptious end, Mr Gideon Yong addressed and thanked all present. Then it was time for some Kodak moments.

After which, a short debrief was held amongst the PSG members. We went home feeling exhausted (from playing), sated (from eating) and making mental plans for the next activity!!"

2nd PSG Badminton Training Session

The weather was humid....TWSS hall warm.

It was time for the PSG players to warm up and start their "engines".

Soon the rythm picked up.Everyone started to polish up their skills and discussed strategies.

Non players were buzy piling the table with breakfast goodies.

After sweating out a few gms with the strenous workout..., we more than piled it back with scrumptious food.

Well.....3rd July will be the finals - who will win, i don't know but one thing i know for sure,

WE WANT TO HAVE FUN!!

1st PSG Badminton Training Session

The 1st Badminton Practice Session shows an encouraging response, where 14 enthusiastic parents with their spouse and childs present to sweat and enjoyed themselves.

The session continually hopes to facilitate a parents/childs/friends bonding, enhance the social cohesion and racial harmony through sports. At the same time embracing the healthy lifestyle to keep healthily body and mind.

Hopefully, next round of training session, more will be able to put aside some of their precious time to join the session.

FAMILY TYPES

Although every family is unique, there are significant similarities between all families. There are three characteristic types or patterns that are observable: Autocratic, Permissive and Nurturing family types.

The Autocratic Family

This is where one or both parents rule the family with absolute authority. Here the parenting style is rigid, domineering, allowing very little freedom or responsibility for the children. Children are pressured to fit into a mould determined by parent(s) with punishment and rewards. Such children struggle to think, feel, believe, and even dream independently outside their parents wishes. As a result, the children have serious difficulties establishing their independent self identities as they grow up. Rules in autocratic families tend to be inflexible, inappropriate, and rigidly enforced. Unquestioning obedience rather than healthy development is fostered. Such children tend to have a weak self-ego, co-dependent on others, emotionally delicate and indecisive.

The Permissive Family

Permissive families reject the harsh and uncompromising stance of autocratic parenting styles, preferring not to accept responsibility for creating a mould for the children to conform. Instead they are encouraged to chart their own course and do their own thing. Little emphases are given to family order and routine. Consequently, few boundaries are drawn leading to inconsistencies in family relationships and loose family ties. As a result the children are confused, leading to their insecurity and poor socialisation abilities. Whereas autocratic families have too much control and too little freedom, permissive families have too much freedom and too little control. This can be a very confusing environment for a child.

The Nurturing Family

Nurturing families place a high value on freedom, equality, and responsibility. The primary focus is on meeting individual needs of all family members and promoting their personal growth and development. Family rules in nurturing families are both flexible and appropriate as they are consistently maintained. Personal freedom is encouraged but with limits to proper consideration for others. This builds healthy ego boundaries and socialisation skills amongst the members. Family types are not static but dynamic. At any given moment a family might assume a structure that includes the characteristics of one or more of the 3 family types, ensuring that family rules mirror the typical changes in the family structure and according to the developmental stages in their children's lives.

Reflection pointers...

1. What do you think is your family type? Autocratic, permissive or nurturing? Is it appropriate and effective in promoting healthy developments in your children?
2. What adjustments do you think you would like to make, if any, to further improve the development of well-being and socialisation for your family today?
You may wish to discuss your thoughts with your spouse and later with the whole family for greater participation from them as you seek to promote healthy growth through the stages of life for them.

Action pointers...

1. Set up a family spring cleaning this weekend. Assign tasks appropriate to the age of your children, giving them „total responsibility‟ and „dependence‟ on them doing this part of the cleaning. Praise them for a job well done and have a reward meal for dinner.
2. Hold a post new year party for your child /children and have them invite their friends. This will allow you an insight into their friends and their world.

CARING DAY - TWSS

It is once again the time of the year when students work together with teachers/parents to give back to the community.
This year Caring Day will be held on 09 April, Friday.
Students are to report to school on Friday and after morning assembly, they will disperse to their respective venues for their Community Involvement Project (CIP) programme.

The programme consisted of:
Sec 1: Beach & park cleaning
Sec 2: Interaction at Kindergartens
Sec 3: Interaction at Homes
Sec 4: Recycling Project

Objectives of the Caring Day (part of Community Involvement Programme):

(a) To inculcate the value of care, responsibility and trustworthiness towards the environment and community.
(b) To inculcate the value of respect and citizenship towards the community and country.
(c) To bring awareness of certain environmental, social and/or national issues.
(d) To nurture the spirit of volunteerism.
(e) To develop the students’ thinking skills such as self reflection, and/or presentation skills.

IT for Parents - Workshop

"GUIDE TO THE INTERNET" was the topic for the first session covered in the workshop. The workshop organised by the TWSS PSG and supported by the school (TWSS) with an ojectives to;

a) Enrich the parents knowledge on the computer operation and usage (hardware and software).

b) Enable the parents to communicate via computer, i.e: emailing etc..

c) Introduce the parent to Internet Browsing (using the browser).

d) Increased the parents awareness to the computer threat, i.e viruses etc.. which might attack the home computer.

Another wonderful day for Teck Whyean, where the whole school community involved in the Caring Day event. The programmes involved the Community and Environmental Care.

The PSG's felt honoured to be part of the force in the Community Involvement Programme with the students and Teachers.

The programme we believed be able To Inculcated the Value of Care, Responsibility and thrustworthiness towards the environment and community to the student. Apart from that, it is able to inculcate the Value of Respect and Citizenship toward the community and country. Thus, it bring awareness of certain environmental, social and/or national issue.

The programme were also will be able to Nurture the Spirit of Volunteerism in students, as well as all involved.

The most important aspect is To Develope the Students' Thinking Skill such as Self Reflection, and/or Presentation Skills.

Well done to the organising committee, led by Mr Lee Meng Teck and his gangs Lin Jiahui, Ganga, Kasturi Pua Lee Too and Hazleeya. All the teachers involved, you are great.

SEPAK TAKRAW CLINIC

The programme was well responded. Approximately 30 students from sec 1 to 3 enthusiatically waiting for the commencement of the session. They gethered at the meeting point before 9 am, although the session was only begin at 9.30am.

The students was briefed by Mr Saharudin a.k.a Coach of the Sepak Takraw Games. He emphasised the importance for the boys to adhere to all the games rules and regulations.

The session was kicked off with each of the boys was evaluated on their ability to juggle the Takraw ball. Later on all the participants were made to stand in circle and juggle the ball and pass to the opposite site. The boys were also showed the technics to use their head to control and pass the ball as well as proper juggling the Takraw ball.

As all the boys was so eager and un-patiently to show off their ability to play the game. Takraw net was erected and they are grouped in regu (3 in one team) for them to play a competitive game.

At the end of the session all the boys looked satisfied and motivated to learn more technics and tricks of the game, although they are playing under the sun. They are anxiously looking forward for next session which is scheduled on Sat 4 April 09.

Kudos to Mr Saharudin and his 2 inter-constituency players for bringing a fun atmosphere to TWSS boys with Sepak Takraw. PSG man and ladies members were also in attendance to support the boys. Mdm Lee Choo & Mr Wafi were also trying their skill in Sepak Takraw while Ms Kasturi stayed with PSG ladies supporting the boys.

TWSS 2009 APPRECIATION DAY

First of all.........well done and kudos to the organiser. All of you done a great job.

The nite was definitely will be the most memorable acassion to all the recipients, especially the PSG members, where 3 of PSG's members was awarded with "The Friend of Teck Whye". This award symbolised the school recognition to their unwavering contribution and being active in school movement.

The occasion was graced by Guest-of Honour Mdm Moliah Sulaiman the Superintendent/south 1. On arrival Mdm Moliah was presented with the Past - Present - Future of Teck Whye Secondary School.

On her speach, the GOH emphasised on 3 factors - Get Inspired - Get Resources- Get Real, she believed is the catalyst which would enable us to move forward to reach our goals.

At end of the ocassion, the VIP's was served with a sumptuous 3 dishes 5 stars dinner created and prepared by TWSS Food & Nutrition students. It is marvelous and elegant.

The School's Family Education of Teck Whye Secondary School organised a seminar for parents today coincide with meeting the parent session which organised by the school.

We believe that parents benefited from the session and able to grasp some tips on how to overcome a conflict or problems between parents and teens. We as a parents are always trying hard to shape our teens to be good, educated and be a good citizen in future by instilling the right values and life skill to our teenagers, but without a knowledge, it is rather difficult to manage it.

Four distinguished speakers were invited to share their vast experiences on teenager aspect. At end of the session the participants looks relieved, at least they are gained/or armed with some knowledge and be prepared in executing the mission in shaping their teenager.

Kris Tay has been engaged by the Gifted Education Branch, Ministry of Singapore, to conduct public speaking workshops for the gifted pupils and the Republic Polytechnic to help students in their presentation skills. She has also conducted talks for parents in schools and corporations, equipping them with the skills to talk to their teenagers on teenage sexuality issues.

Kris’s passionate dedication and her plethora of experiences contribute to her effectiveness as a trainer cum facilitator. Most importantly, her work is fuelled by her passion in touching and transforming lives.

She focused her talk on " Motivating the Leader Within My Child". Parents played a vital role in helping the children discover the leader within and prepare them for a life of great contribution and service to their families, their communities, their places of employment and the world. She believed that parents definitely want their chidrens to be able to lead their own lives, to be strong examples for others, to live by principles, to be influence for good. And that is self-leadership, doing the right thing even when no one is looking.

Kris also emphasised that every child has that kind of leadership within. The challenge is how to bring it out and how to nuture it.

Haji Mohd Yusof Ismail is the CEO of Ain Society of Singapore, He is a well known speaker, especially among Malay Muslim community, with his vast experiences in dealing with problematic teenager, he always shared his experiences with parents on how to identify, approach and overcome the teenage problem. He is also given some tips on how to avoid the parent and teenage conflict.

On his talk entitled "Sayang Anak Ku Sayang", he emphasised on how importance for parents to exercise/ or stressed on discipline and inculcating self reponsibility in the teenagers/childrens, without creating a bad rapport or relationship with them.

He also urging parents to adopt a positif disciplining methods by psychologically and deplomatic approach. Another factors, parents should look into was to acquire and upgrade a parenting knowledge. Parenting can be a tricky and hard work, which came packaged with pressure and difficulties as well as the joys and pleasure.
Thaddeus Lawrence, is a qualified trainer and facilitator for youth and corporate workshops with extensive experience in the education sector. Highly rated in his work with youths, he is an excellent and engaging speaker whose areas of passion and expertise include self leadership, personal development and building an empowering mindset. He is also a freelance non-fiction writer.

"Winning with Your Teenagers" the topic that he shared with the parents in his talk.

He shared the "WAND" approach which offers a practical approach to proven strategies and techniques to improve communication and develop skills for creating a suitable learning environment.

When teens have the support structure in place, they feel more secure, their self-esteem and confidence grow and they become more motivated to achieve both academic and personal success.

What is "WAND", W = what, why, when, where, whom, what for. A = action and acknowledgement. N = neutral and non-judging. D = individual differences make a difference.

With the approach the parents be able to discover the learning needs and challenges of your child; how his brain is developing; and the multiple intelligences that reveal his full potential.

He also stressed out how parents can guide their child to make optimal use of his learning styles, support them fully in his learning process and build stronger parent-child ties.

Thad, were also reminded the parents of how important the 5 LOVE languages..........1. Word of affirmation.....2. Physical touch......3. Act of service........4. Gifts and 5. A quality time with the children/teenager.

Collaboration Meeting - PSG and Nomal (Technical) Dept

The meeting focused basically on how PSG able to Collaborate with NT department and brainstormed for suitable activities for the students. Matters mentioned and concerned was to keep the student away from the streets, this is to avoid them from influences by a bad companion.
The programme discussed was targeted to the lower secondary, as they are prone to influenced by their senior (upper secondary)
Proposals to assist the school with any other possible collaborations were also being discussed.

Bowling Championship 2009

Today marked another successful day for TWSS PSG. More then 70 crowds consisting of teachers, parents & supporters turn-up for the 3rd PSG Annual Bowling Championship at Westwood Bowling Alley, Bukit Batok.
A warm friendship/comradeship atmosphere were felt through-out the games proceeding. It is more to a family gethering rather than a competition. Many were seen chatting or goes from lane to lane just to say hello. A sumptuous buffet breakfast were also prepared and ready for them to tuck-in to pump some energy before the game started.
The games was officiated opened by TWSS Principal Mr Adrian Cordeiro.
At the end of the game, the PSG team "Longkang King" emerged as an overall Champion.

Briskwalking Activity

Inactive in physical activity will lead to a major risk factor, cardiovascular disease, and most housewives or working mom's are not physically active enough to gain any health benefits. Swimming, cycling, jogging, aerobic dancing, walking or many other activities can help our heart. Whether it's included in a structured exercise program or part of our daily routine, all physical activity adds up to a healthier heart.

Fuelled by self awareness of how important a healthy lifestyle amongst colleagues, yesterday marked another milestone to TWSS PSG members, although the activity was more on personal planning, 2.4 km was covered by briskwalking. The activity was brainchilded by Anisah and her buddy Masilah. They managed to gathered homemakers and working mom's to joined in the walk and hopefully they will embrace into healthy lifestyle after afew session.

Next week 22/02/09, Sunday another session will be organised and hoping for more participation this round. Tentative venue will be Choa Chu Kang Park.

So watch out for an announcement....................

The 1st School Family Education programme 2009 concluded today saw an encouraging attendance and supports from Secondary One student's parents, as well as members of TWSS Parents Support Group. The talk was delivered in two versions, English and Mandarin.

The TWSS SFE coordinator expressing his Heartfelt Thank and Appreciation to all attendees, he is also heartily expressed his gratitudes to Coordinator Teachers and all members of TWSS PSG, under the helms of Mdm Anisah, who had rendered tremendous and unwavering support toward ensuring the success of the programme.

We do hope to have unwavering support from all parents in attending this session. We believed that by attending this session, you are able to grasp some tips on how to overcome a conflict between us as a parents and our teens. We as parents are always trying hard to shape our teens to be good, educated and be a good citizen in future by instilling the right values and life skill to our teenagers but without a knowledge, it is rather difficult to manage it. At end of the session we hope at least we are armed with some knowledge and be prepared in executing our mission.

Synopsis:

Conflict is inevitable in any relationship, but especially in the relationship between parents and teens. It seems that there is a "pact" amongst teenagers that they must "rebel". All of sudden, they are no longer the sweet, baby-faced bundle of joy. They become the "little adults" who demand independence, who find it boring to hang out with their parents.
How can we, as parents, handle such conflict?. We need to understand what our teen are going through. This may be a good time to examine, and perhaps re-evaluate, our relationship with our teens.
Communication and understanding are specially important during this tumultuous year. As parents, we need to coach our teens, set boundaries and help shape their ideas and opinions which will hold them in good stead. Come discover practical communication tips so that we can manoeuvre through the parents - and - teen conflict and build stronger relationship with our teens.

About the speaker:

Kris has been engaged by the Gifted Education Branch, Ministry of Singapore, to conduct public speaking workshop for the gifted pupils and the Republic Polytechnic to help students in their presentation skill. She has also conducted talks for parents in schools and corporation, equipping them with the skills to talk to their teenagers on teenage sexuality issues.
Kris's passionate dedication and her plethora of experiences contribute to her effectiveness as a trainer cum facilitator. Most importantly, her work is fuelled by her passion in touching and transforming lives.

The 2009 PSG AGM was smoothly proceeded.
All atendees unanimously agreed reelect the 2008 ExCo for another terms.
In 2009 two position was abolished, it Co-vice Chairman & Asst. Treasurer.

Congratulation to the following who was reelected:

Chaiperson: Mdm Anisah Amin

Start off as PSG member in 2004.
1st elected as a Chairperson in 2007, before that she's hold a post of Secretary, Backed by her passion, high dedication and enthusiastic in her involvement, she uplifted the PSG movement from year to year under her helm.
Although her child had graduated from TWSS, she's still happy and willingly to serve for the benefits of the childrens, parent and the school.
Anisah was also awarded as "Friend of Teck Whye" in 2007.

Vice-Chairperson: Mr Shawn Zhang

Shawn had been with PSG since 2006, He was active in TWSS School Advisory Committee too.
He is a sportman and full of sense of humor, good in badminton (our badminton chief), beside that he also active in other community works. With his vast experiences, he always came up with "out-of-box" ideas which spices up to the movement. He received "Friend's of Teck Whye" award in 2008.

Secretary and PSG Facilitator: Mdm Yew Geok

She is quiet but full of ideas, she beautify the PSG movement with a gentle touch.
Once, she refused to hold the post given but she's a hidden gems............she's done wonders as a secretary.
She was trained as Parent's Facilitator under MCYS and SFE Coordinator in Unity Secondary presently. YG joined PSG in 2007.

Asst. Secretary: Isty Rahayu

Isty is a new parent, joined PSG in 2009. Her willingness and courage to commit and hold the post was well welcome by all AGM attendees. She definitely confidence that she be able to contributes and active to the movement.

Treasurer: Mdm Foong Har

In her real life, she jugling numbers, dollars and cents.
She was awarded "Friend of Teck Whye" in 2008 and serving in PSG movement since 2006.
She's a pleasant and trustworthy lady, so she's a right person to look after PSG account although there is not much funds available.

PSG Facilitator 1: Jamil Bosri

An ordinary man, firefighter and rescuer as a profession, being his passion to serve the community. He did it since school days. In an early day, active in RC's and mosque activities. With TWSS PSG since 2007, recently he was appointed as member of the School Advisory Committee. He also active in archery and committee member of the club. A little jovial but serious when task was assigned. A bit regimental in executing task. Trained as a Parent's Facilitator and Mentor organised by MCYS.

School Family Education Coordinator: Mr Christ Loh

Fuelled with his passion to contribute to the society and felling sad obseving many teenager was slew away with a bad companions, hence made him the right person to lead the School Family Education programmes. His vast experiences will definitely enhance the SFE programmes. He is also teaching in Church, that another avenue for him contributing to the community.

15 Sub-Committee Members was elected, consiting of Senior and New Parents

ExCo members were really hopes that more parents will surface and come forward to join the sub-committee. Hence, infuture they be able to take up those important position.

Without an active participation from members the PSG unable to move and widen up the wings to explore programmes or activities as a result will benefits our child, ourselves and the school.

Your invaluable time, ideas, opinion, suggestion, participation and support rendered are greatly appreciated which can't be exchange with a gold............only "GOD" will repay all your kindness and effort.

Thank you very much to Vice-principal, Teachers and Parents who attended the AGM today and to those who unable to be with us, we believed their blessing and prayers was always accompanying the PSG movement.

The meeting was attended by more than 40 attendees, consisted of ExCo members, senior members as well as those new members (sec 1 parents)

The Vice Principal Mr Gideon Yong unveil the meeting, emphasizing on the TWSS Motto, Mission and Vision. (Click the Photo for full text). He also stress out the impotance of instilling values and life skill to teenagers in the journey to archieve success.

The VP also urging the parents to come forward and collaborates with the school. This is an avenue in creating a links between school, students and parent. VP saw that by joining the PSG movement, it is a best way to get closer to the school.

The 2008 Chairperson Mdm Anisah Amin, shared her experience with all presence the difficulties in coping up with teenagers but with collaboration with the school and networked with fellows PSG managed to gets tips on how to overcome the situation.

Dear Parents of Sec 1

We welcome you to TWSS Parent Support Group.

The PSG at TWSS has been set up to provide an avenue of communication for parents and the school. As parents we have a stake in out children development into well rounded and responsible youths who can make a positive impact on the society around our son/daughters. We are glad you have chosen to be part of your children development in his 4-5 years secondary education by joining the TWSS Parent Support Group.

Members can contribute their ideas and experiences to organize important and meaningful activities. We encourage you to assist in enhancing the values of the existing school system through their valuable feedback, experiences and active participation.

Our AGM for 2009 will be held on the Saturday, 7th February 2009 at 8.45am at the school AVA room. Your attendance is require for this event.
